How to Connect the Novation Impulse MIDI Keyboard

The Novation Impulse MIDI keyboard can be connected directly to your computer and used in your production software.

Here is how to check the connection and configure it in Logic Pro or FL Studio.

In short

  1. Connect the keyboard to your computer with the USB cable.
  2. Check that it powers on correctly.
  3. Select Novation Impulse as a MIDI input in your DAW.
  4. Load a virtual instrument and play a few notes to test the connection.

1. Connect the keyboard to your computer

Connect the Novation Impulse directly to your computer using the USB cable.

The keyboard should power on once connected.

The keyboard does not power on?

If the Novation Impulse does not power on:

  • try another USB port on your computer;
  • avoid a USB hub and connect the keyboard directly;
  • try another USB cable if necessary.

2. Configure the keyboard in your DAW

MIDI configuration depends on the software you use.

The procedures below cover Logic Pro and FL Studio.

In Logic Pro

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to MIDI.
  3. Select Impulse and Impulse MIDI In as MIDI inputs.
  4. Select Impulse as the MIDI input device for your track.

In FL Studio

  1. Open Settings > MIDI Settings.
  2. Select Novation Impulse from the MIDI input list.
  3. Click Enable.

3. Test the connection

Once the keyboard is connected and configured, load a virtual instrument (VST) in your DAW.

Play a few notes on the Novation Impulse.

If your DAW receives the MIDI signal correctly, the virtual instrument should react when you play.
